We re hearing from board members in Hastings who are discussing a policy that would ban certain displays on school walls which would include pride flags and other symbols. The potential move is receiving some pushback as board members and other school officials tried to clarify the policy language on Thursday. If we have gay pride flags up are we comfortable having straight pride flags up, asked Carrie Tate, Hastings School Board Member. We don t want to institutionalize it so it feels sterile and I just walked into jail, because nothing is allowed on those common walls, said Superintendent Dr. Kristine Wehrkamp Herman. The tentative policy would prohibit political material or anything that promotes a personal, religious, or ideological viewpoint unrelated to the board-approved curriculum I m talking about Pride flags, that is not a universally accepted, moral or religious viewpoint, Tate said.
